Forestiere Underground Gardens

$8.00

The Forestiere Underground Gardens are a network of hand-dug rooms, courtyards and passages off Shaw Avenue near Highway 99 in Fresno. They were made by Baldassare Forestiere (1879-1946), an immigrant from the hamlet of Filari near Rometta in Sicily, who found his Fresno land too hard-panned for citrus and began digging below it around 1906. Working with hand tools and a pair of mules until his death in 1946, he carved about 65 rooms on three levels up to 23 feet deep, spread over some 10 acres, including bedrooms, a kitchen, a fishpond and a parlor. Skylights let fruit trees grow underground, some over 100 years old and grafted to bear several fruits. The gardens were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and are still run by the Forestiere family.
