The Five Points Historic Cultural District is a Denver historic district along Welton Street in the Five Points neighborhood, northeast of downtown, designated by the city in 2002 for its place in African American history. The name comes from the old streetcar stop where Welton Street, 26th Avenue, 27th Street and Washington Street meet. From the 1920s to the 1950s, when segregation and restrictive covenants shut Black residents out of much of the city, Welton was the commercial and cultural heart of Black Denver, lined with more than fifty clubs, hotels, theaters, restaurants and offices, and it was called the Harlem of the West. Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and Nat King Cole played here, and the Rossonian Hotel, listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book, housed Black performers turned away by other Denver hotels. Interpretive markers along the street form a self-guided walking tour, and the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library and the 1934 Roxy Theater still anchor the corridor.
