Iron-on patch

Fisk University (Jubilee Hall)

$8.00

Fisk University is a private historically Black liberal arts college in North Nashville, founded in January 1866 as the Fisk Free Colored School by the American Missionary Association to educate freed people. In 1871 its student choir, the Fisk Jubilee Singers, set out on a fundraising tour of the United States and Europe that popularized spirituals such as "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" and paid for Jubilee Hall. Completed in 1876 to a Gothic Revival design by New York architect Stephen D. Hatch, the six-story hall was the university's first permanent building and is still used as a residence hall. Inside hangs a floor-to-ceiling portrait of the original singers that Queen Victoria gave the university during the 1873 tour. Jubilee Hall is a National Historic Landmark, and Fisk's 40-acre campus is a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
