First African Baptist Church traces its roots to Black Baptists, enslaved and free, who began gathering around Savannah in 1773, and it was formally organized under the Rev. Andrew Bryan in 1788, making it one of the oldest Black congregations in North America. After an 1832 split, pastor Andrew C. Marshall led most of the members to Franklin Square, where the congregation raised its present brick sanctuary in the 1850s and completed it in 1859. Free and enslaved members made the bricks and built the church themselves, and it was the first brick building in Georgia owned by African Americans. Holes in the sanctuary floor, laid out in a pattern read as a Kongo cosmogram, are traditionally explained as air vents for people escaping slavery who hid in the crawl space beneath it, and the church later hosted weekly meetings of Savannah's early civil rights movement. Guided tours take in the sanctuary, balcony pews carved by enslaved craftsmen, 1885 stained glass and a museum of records reaching back to the 18th century.
