Fell's Point is a waterfront shipbuilding town laid out in 1763, when Edward Fell began selling lots on the land his father, William Fell, had acquired on the north shore of the harbor. It merged with Baltimore Town and Jones Town in 1773, and its shipyards went on to build the fast Baltimore clippers that sailed as privateers against British shipping in the War of 1812. Cobblestone streets and brick rowhouses survive around a municipal market house, antique shops and more than 120 pubs. It has been home to large Irish, German, Jewish, Polish, Ukrainian and other immigrant communities, and in 1969 it became the first historic district in Maryland listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
