Iron-on patch

Federal Hill Park

$8.00

Federal Hill Park is a 10.3-acre hilltop park on the south shore of the Inner Harbor and the classic spot for photographing Baltimore's downtown skyline across the water. In May 1861 Union troops under General Benjamin Butler built a fort here, Fort Federal Hill, with cannon aimed at the city to keep secessionist Baltimore loyal, and held it through the Civil War; a large flag, cannon and a Grand Army of the Republic monument recall that period. The hill takes its name from a 1788 celebration of Maryland's ratification of the Constitution, and from 1795 a marine observatory on its summit signaled arriving ships to the city's merchants. Statues of Major George Armistead and General Samuel Smith, commanders at the 1814 Battle of Baltimore, stand on its northeast slope. The city made the hill a public park in 1880.
