Ensign Peak Nature Park

$8.00

Ensign Peak Nature Park is a city-owned park on the hills just north of downtown Salt Lake City, built around the dome-shaped summit of Ensign Peak. A trail climbs from an entrance plaza on Ensign Vista Drive to the top, where a 1934 stone monument stands and the view takes in the Salt Lake Valley and the Great Salt Lake. On July 26, 1847, two days after the first pioneer wagon train entered the valley, Brigham Young and a small group of church leaders climbed the peak and named it as a place to raise an ensign, or banner. The summit monument is 18.47 feet tall in honor of 1847 and is built with roughly 100 stones sent from historic sites. The nature park, with its trailhead plaza and interpretive stations along the trail, was dedicated in 1997.
