Enchanted Highway

Gary Greff, a former schoolteacher, began welding giant scrap-metal sculptures along a stretch of North Dakota highway in 1989 to draw travelers into his shrinking hometown of Regent after its school closed. Over the following two-plus decades he single-handedly built and installed seven sculptures — including the record-setting 'Geese in Flight,' at roughly 110 feet the world's largest scrap-metal sculpture — spaced across the 32-mile route between Regent and the I-94 interchange near Gladstone. This patch is pinned to the Regent terminus, where Greff's gift shop and gallery (a converted schoolhouse) anchor the route; Geese in Flight itself stands 32 miles north at the I-94 end. Greff still maintains the sculptures himself, and all seven pieces remain free and viewable from the roadside.
