Emerald Bay State Park, on the California side of Lake Tahoe near South Lake Tahoe, protects a small, deep-green cove designated a National Natural Landmark. At its center is Fannette Island, the only island in Lake Tahoe, topped by the ruins of a small stone teahouse. On the shore stands Vikingsholm, a Scandinavian-style summer mansion built in 1929 for heiress Lora Josephine Knight, now open for public tours. The bay is a popular kayaking and boating spot, though currents near the mouth of Eagle Falls can be strong.
