Emancipation Park is a 10-acre park at 3018 Emancipation Avenue in Houston's Third Ward, and the oldest park in the city. In 1872 four formerly enslaved men, Richard Allen, Richard Brock, Elias Dibble and the Reverend Jack Yates, paid $800 for the land to hold Juneteenth celebrations, and for years the park was used only for that annual event. The land passed to the City of Houston in 1916 and became a municipal park in 1918, and from 1922 to 1940, under segregation, it was the only public park in Houston open to Black residents. After decades of decline, a $33.6 million renovation with new buildings by architect Phil Freelon was completed in 2017, and Juneteenth celebrations returned to the park. It became a UNESCO Slave Route Project site in 2019.
