Elfreth's Alley

$8.00

Elfreth's Alley is a narrow cobblestone street in the Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia, running from North Front Street to North 2nd Street between Arch and Quarry Streets. The alley was laid out around 1703, and its 32 surviving houses were built between 1728 and 1836, a rare intact block of Georgian and Federal-style homes built for tradesmen such as shipwrights, silversmiths, glassblowers and furniture makers. It takes its name from Jeremiah Elfreth, an 18th-century blacksmith who owned land at its 2nd Street end. The Elfreth's Alley Museum at numbers 124 and 126 preserves the home of a pair of dressmakers, and the alley is a National Historic Landmark.
