Elephant Butte Lake State Park surrounds New Mexico's largest lake, formed by Elephant Butte Dam, completed on the Rio Grande in 1916 as one of the earliest large dams built by the federal Bureau of Reclamation. Both the dam and the park take their name from a volcanic rock formation near the dam that resembles a crouching elephant. The reservoir is a major destination for boating, houseboating, and other watersports in an otherwise arid part of the state. Water levels fluctuate significantly with drought and irrigation demand in the Rio Grande basin.
