El Pueblo de Los Ángeles Historical Monument is the historic district around the old Plaza in the northeast corner of downtown Los Angeles, the area where the city grew from its 1781 Spanish founding. The district was the town's center under Spanish, Mexican and early American rule, and was designated a state historic monument in 1953 before being listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Its oldest buildings include the Avila Adobe of 1818, the city's oldest surviving residence, along with the Old Plaza Church, Pico House and the Old Plaza Fire Station. Olvera Street, a pedestrian lane of shops, restaurants and vendors running north from the Plaza, opened as a Mexican-style marketplace in 1930 through the campaign of preservationist Christine Sterling. The monument sits just west of Union Station across Alameda Street.
