El Centro de Oro (Golden Block)

El Centro de Oro, also called El Bloque de Oro or the Golden Block, is the commercial heart of Philadelphia's Puerto Rican and Latino community, centered on North 5th Street and running from Lehigh Avenue to Allegheny Avenue in the Fairhill neighborhood of North Philadelphia. It was established in the 1970s by community leaders from a Latino community being displaced from the Spring Garden area, who encouraged Latino businesses and organizations to move north to Fairhill and Kensington. At its southern end, at 5th and Lehigh, stands Taller Puertorriqueño, a cultural organization founded by Puerto Rican and Latino artists and activists in 1974, which opened its El Corazón Cultural Center at 2600 North 5th Street in December 2016. In 2011 a $3.8 million streetscape project paved the sidewalks with gold-colored, glitter-flecked concrete and added steel palm trees designed by artist Wendell Turner. Other organizations on the strip include Asociación Puertorriqueños en Marcha and Artistas y Músicos Latino Americanos.
