Edgar Allan Poe Grave & Westminster Hall

$8.00

Westminster Hall and Burying Ground, at West Fayette and North Greene streets in downtown Baltimore, is where Edgar Allan Poe is buried. The First Presbyterian Church established the graveyard in 1787, and in 1852 Westminster Presbyterian Church was built over part of it on brick piers that straddle the graves, creating what Baltimoreans call the catacombs. Poe died in Baltimore in 1849, and in 1875 his remains were moved to a new memorial near the entrance, long visited by the mysterious "Poe Toaster." The burying ground and Poe's memorial are the reliably accessible parts of the site: Westminster Hall and the catacombs open only on limited, tour-based hours. The complex, cared for by the University of Maryland School of Law, was declared a national historic district in 1974.
