Eastern State Penitentiary

$8.00

Eastern State Penitentiary is a former prison in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia that operated from 1829 to 1971 and is now a museum and National Historic Landmark. Designed by John Haviland and opened on October 25, 1829, it is considered the world's first true penitentiary: its radial, wagon-wheel plan of sky-lit cellblocks was built to hold prisoners in separate confinement as a path to reform, and it became the model for more than 300 prisons worldwide. At its completion it was the largest and most expensive public structure yet built in the United States. Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton were among its inmates. The prison is kept as a stabilized ruin and has been open for history tours since 1994, with an audio tour, guide-led tours and a long-running Halloween haunted-house event.
