Eastern Market is Capitol Hill's public market, a red-brick hall on 7th Street SE a few blocks east of the U.S. Capitol, designed by Adolf Cluss and opened in 1873. It is the last of Washington's historic city-owned public markets still in operation, with butchers, bakers and cheese sellers in the indoor South Hall and a farmers' market, artisans and a flea market outside on weekends. The market traces its roots to an 1805 proclamation by Thomas Jefferson, and the Center and North Halls were added in 1908. An early-morning fire in April 2007 gutted the South Hall, but the outdoor market never closed and the restored building reopened in June 2009. On weekends 7th Street in front of the hall closes to traffic and the vendors spread across the pedestrian block and the plaza on the old Hine school site opposite.
