Eads Bridge is a combined road and rail bridge over the Mississippi River linking St. Louis with East St. Louis, Illinois, between Laclede's Landing and the Gateway Arch grounds. Designed by James Buchanan Eads and completed in 1874, it was the first bridge across the Mississippi south of the Missouri River and is now the oldest bridge on the river. It pioneered the large-scale use of steel as a structural material, and its 520-foot center arch was the longest rigid span in the world when built. Its upper deck carries cars and pedestrians, and its former rail deck carries MetroLink trains.
