Douthat State Park, near Clifton Forge in Virginia's Alleghany Highlands, opened in 1936 as one of the original six parks in the Virginia state park system, all built with Civilian Conservation Corps labor during the Great Depression. Its cabins, dam, and lake were constructed largely by hand, and the park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 in recognition of that CCC-era craftsmanship. Douthat Lake offers swimming, boating, and fishing, and trails climb into the surrounding mountains. Much of the park's original stone-and-log architecture remains in daily use.
