Dock Street Theatre

$8.00

The Dock Street Theatre, at 135 Church Street in Charleston's French Quarter, stands on the site of the first building in America built for theatrical performances, which opened on February 12, 1736, with George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer. That original theatre was probably lost in the Great Fire of 1740. The building standing today was built in 1809 as the Planter's Hotel, where the actor Junius Brutus Booth performed and Robert Smalls worked as a waiter. In the Great Depression it became a Works Progress Administration project, and a new theatre built inside the hotel's shell reopened on November 26, 1937; a $19 million city renovation followed in 2010. Local lore holds that the building is haunted, most often by a woman in a red gown on the second-floor balcony.
