Derby Square / Old Town Hall

Derby Square is a small public square in downtown Salem, and its centerpiece is Old Town Hall, built in 1816-17 and the earliest surviving municipal building in the city. The Federal-style hall was designed with a public market on the ground floor and a public hall above; the second-floor Great Hall has always been used for public events and held the town offices until 1837. The building has elements attributed to Charles Bulfinch and to Salem's own Samuel McIntire, and it was saved from demolition in the 1930s by preservation architect Philip Horton Smith. The square and the hall carry the name of the Derby family, Salem's leading merchant family of the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 2009 the Salem Farmers' Market has set up on Derby Square on Thursdays from June to October.
