Dequindre Cut Greenway

The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a paved walking and cycling path on Detroit's east side that follows a former Grand Trunk Western Railroad line, much of it about 25 feet below street level. The rail line dates to the 1830s, and the below-grade cut was built from the 1920s under a joint city and railroad program of grade separations. Passenger service through the cut ended in 1982, and during the years the line sat abandoned it became a canvas for graffiti artists; that artwork was deliberately left on the bridge abutments when the greenway was built. The first 1.2-mile section opened in 2009, and an extension north to Mack Avenue along the east edge of Eastern Market opened in 2016. The path has separate lanes for pedestrians and bicycles and reaches the Detroit Riverfront near William G. Milliken State Park.
