Iron-on patch

Deering Estate

$8.00

Deering Estate is the 444-acre former home of industrialist Charles Deering on Biscayne Bay in the Cutler area of Palmetto Bay, south of Miami. Its two historic houses are the Richmond Cottage, a pioneer family home that became a 22-room hotel in 1900, and the three-story Mediterranean Stone House that Phineas Paist designed and Deering completed in 1922. Both are now museums filled with paintings, books and antique furnishings. The grounds hold what is thought to be the largest virgin coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the continental United States, plus the Cutler Burial Mound, a prehistoric Native American mound reached by boardwalk. The State of Florida bought the estate in 1985, Miami-Dade County Parks runs it, and it has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1986.
