Deep Deuce is a historic neighborhood in downtown Oklahoma City, a few blocks north of Bricktown and centered on NE 2nd Street. In the 1920s and 1930s it was a regional center of jazz and of Black culture and commerce, and in the 1940s and 1950s it was the city's largest African-American downtown neighborhood. Musicians tied to its jazz history include Jimmy Rushing, Charlie Christian, Lester Young, the Blue Devils, Count Basie, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, and Zelia Breaux's Aldridge Theater, the city's first theater for African Americans, opened here in 1920. Writer Ralph Ellison grew up in the neighborhood and later wrote about it. Much of it was cleared for I-235 in the 1980s, and today it is mostly low-rise apartments and restored mixed-use buildings.
