Iron-on patch

Dawson Park

$8.00

Dawson Park is a 2.05-acre park at N Stanton Street and N Williams Avenue in North Portland's historic Albina area. The city acquired it in 1921 and named it for the Rev. John Dawson, an Episcopal minister who championed child welfare, and it was designed by Florence Holmes Gerke, the city's landscape architect. By the late 1940s it served as an unofficial town square for the surrounding African American community, and over the next 30 years civil rights marches began here and Robert F. Kennedy spoke here. Its gazebo, built in 1978, carries the onion-shaped cupola saved from the Hill Block Building, a cornerstone of the Albina business district that was torn down in the early 1970s for a hospital expansion that never came. A 2013 to 2014 renovation added a playground, a splash pad and twelve story boulders that record the neighborhood's history.
