Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial

$8.00

The Cyrus Avery Route 66 Memorial is the Cyrus Avery Centennial Plaza at Southwest Boulevard and Riverside Drive in Tulsa, beside the east end of the historic 11th Street Bridge over the Arkansas River. Avery, a Tulsa businessman and county commissioner, pushed to build the bridge and later led the effort to create U.S. Route 66 in 1926, and the bridge is said to be the main reason the highway was routed through Tulsa. The plaza was dedicated on August 7, 2008, with flags of the eight Route 66 states and a skyway observation deck, and in 2012 artist Robert Summers unveiled East Meets West, a 14-foot-tall bronze of the Avery family's Model T meeting a horse-drawn wagon. The 18-span concrete-arch bridge opened in 1916-17 and carried traffic until 1972; it is closed today but in full view of the plaza, and a Route 66 neon-sign park opened at its west end in 2020.
