Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is an 8-acre public park on the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa, on the Tampa Riverwalk in the Waterfront Arts District. Its open lawn slopes toward the river in wide terraces, surrounded by fountains, a large playground, a public boat dock, a dog park, shaded pavilions, an amphitheater, sculptures and a garden designed by Dan Kiley. The Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children's Museum border it on the north, and it looks across the river to the University of Tampa's Plant Hall. The park is named for Curtis Hixon, Tampa's mayor from 1943 until his death in 1956, and sits beside the site of Curtis Hixon Hall, the city's first convention center, which stood from 1965 to 1993. Redesigned by landscape architect Thomas Balsley, it opened in its current form in 2010 and hosts concerts, festivals, and food and art shows, earning the nickname "Tampa's town square".
