Crawford Notch State Park

Crawford Notch State Park occupies a dramatic mountain pass through New Hampshire's White Mountains, followed today by U.S. Route 302 near Bartlett. In 1826 a landslide here killed the Willey family, whose deaths became one of the region's best-known tragedies and reportedly inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story 'The Ambitious Guest.' The park includes Arethusa Falls, generally cited as New Hampshire's tallest waterfall at around 200 feet, along with Silver Cascade and Flume Cascade, both visible from the roadside. Steep granite walls rise on either side of the notch, framing views popular with both hikers and drivers.
