Cozy Dog Drive In

$8.00

The Cozy Dog Drive In is a Route 66 restaurant at 2935 South Sixth Street in Springfield, Illinois, known for its Cozy Dog, a hot dog dipped in cornmeal batter and served on a stick. Ed Waldmire first sold the snack as the "crusty cur" at a military base during World War II, and his wife Virginia renamed it the Cozy Dog. He began selling them at the Illinois State Fair in 1946, the same year he opened the first Cozy Dog stand outside his house. The restaurant moved to its current building, just north of the original site, in 1996, and is filled with Route 66 memorabilia and a gift shop. Route 66 artist Bob Waldmire was Ed and Virginia's son.
