Council Oak Park is a small city park at 18th Street and Cheyenne Avenue in Tulsa, built around the Creek Council Oak Tree, the landmark that marks the founding of the modern city. In 1836, after their forced removal from Alabama, the Lochapoka Tribal Town of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation chose the oak, on a hill above the Arkansas River, as their council ground and lit a new ceremonial fire with coals carried on the journey. They held councils, ceremonies, feasts and games there until 1896 and named their nearby village Tallasi, or 'Old Town'. When the site was threatened with becoming a parking lot, the Creek Nation and several individuals bought it and gave it to the city, which made it Creek Nation Council Oak Park; it now holds an ethno-horticultural garden of plants the Creeks used in Alabama and the 2008 'Morning Prayer' Trail of Tears monument by Creek artist Dan Brook. The oak is still alive, and in November 2024 the site was returned to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
