Coopers Rock State Forest, near Morgantown, West Virginia, takes its name from local legend describing a fugitive barrel-maker, or cooper, who is said to have hidden and worked at the site to evade capture. Its main overlook looks out over the Cheat River Gorge from atop sandstone cliffs, and the surrounding forest is riddled with boulder fields that have made it one of the most popular rock-climbing and bouldering destinations in the state. An extensive trail network supports hiking and mountain biking. The forest sits close to West Virginia University, making it a frequent day-trip destination for Morgantown residents.
