Concordia Cemetery

$8.00

Concordia Cemetery is a 52-acre historic burial ground in central El Paso with between 60,000 and 65,000 graves. It began on Rancho Concordia, where Juana Maria Ascarate Stephenson became the first person buried in 1856, and by the 1890s its sections had been bought by many different communities. The result is a patchwork of distinct grounds, including the only Chinese cemetery in Texas, begun by Chinese railroad workers who settled in El Paso, and sections for Buffalo Soldiers, Jewish families, Freemasons, Mormons and Catholics. It is also the resting place of Old West gunfighter John Wesley Hardin, whose grave is enclosed in a cage, and of John Selman, the man who killed him. Managed by the Concordia Heritage Association, the cemetery hosts Día de los Muertos celebrations and ghost tours.
