The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is a free history museum downtown, in the granite, clock-towered building that served as the El Paso County Courthouse from 1903 to 1973. Its roots go back to 1896, when the El Paso County Pioneers' Association formed to collect the region's history; the collection was given to the City of Colorado Springs in 1937 and moved into the old courthouse in 1979. More than 60,000 objects cover the Pikes Peak region, from Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute artifacts to the city's founding, mining, military installations and health-resort era, along with Van Briggle Pottery, regional art and a nationally significant quilt collection. Part of writer Helen Hunt Jackson's house is represented with possessions she owned, and the Starsmore Center for Local History holds the personal papers of city founder General William Jackson Palmer. The building stands in Alamo Square Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
