Iron-on patch

Colorado Lagoon

$8.00

Colorado Lagoon is a 29-acre public park in east Long Beach built around an 18-acre tidal lagoon, one of the few coastal salt marshes left on the West Coast. Once part of the Los Cerritos Wetlands, it was dredged in the 1920s for recreation, and a diving platform here was used for diving trials for the 1932 Summer Olympics. Decades of storm-drain runoff left the water so polluted that locals called it "Polio Pond", until a restoration begun in 2009 removed contaminated sediment and the lagoon reopened in 2012. Today the park has a sandy swimming beach, picnic lawns, play equipment, a model boat shop and a wetland and marine science education center. Round stingrays, moon jellies and eelgrass beds fill the lagoon, and the shoreline draws a variety of birds.
