Colonial Park Cemetery

$8.00

Colonial Park Cemetery is an 18th- and early 19th-century burial ground in downtown Savannah, established in 1750 as the cemetery of Christ Church Parish when Savannah was the capital of the British colony of Georgia. It expanded three times to reach its present six acres, bounded by Oglethorpe Avenue, Habersham Street, Perry Lane and Abercorn Street, and in 1789 it opened to Savannahians of every denomination. Burials ended in 1853; after Union troops occupied the city in December 1864, soldiers camped among the graves and are said to have damaged or altered some of the markers. The city turned the grounds into a public park in 1896. Button Gwinnett, a Georgia signer of the Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary general Lachlan McIntosh and more than 700 victims of the 1820 yellow fever epidemic are buried here.
