Civic Center Park

$8.00

Civic Center Park is the formal Neoclassical park at the heart of Denver's Civic Center, bounded by Colfax Avenue, Broadway, 14th Avenue and Bannock Street on the axis between the Colorado State Capitol and the City and County Building. Mayor Robert W. Speer pushed for it from 1904 after seeing the City Beautiful ideas of the 1893 Chicago world's fair, and Chicago planner Edward H. Bennett's design, with its Greek amphitheater, colonnade and seal pond, opened in 1919. The park holds a fountain, statues, formal gardens, a war memorial, the Voorhies Memorial and the McNichols Civic Center Building, Denver's first public library. The Civic Center was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012 as one of the country's finest examples of City Beautiful civic design. It is Denver's gathering ground for festivals, parades, vigils and protests, from PrideFest and the People's Fair to A Taste of Colorado on Labor Day weekend.
