City of Rocks State Park, near Deming, New Mexico, is named for its clusters of tall rhyolite pinnacles, formed from volcanic ash-flow tuff that was later eroded by wind and water into shapes resembling city streets and towers. Some campsites are tucked directly among the rock formations, giving campers the feeling of staying inside the 'city' itself. The park sits at the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert and offers hiking, rock scrambling, and a small desert botanical garden. Its dark skies also make it a popular stargazing spot.
