The Cincinnati Observatory, known locally as the Mt. Lookout Observatory, stands on top of Mount Lookout on Cincinnati's east side and is the oldest professional observatory in the United States. It was founded by Ormsby M. Mitchel on Mount Ida, where former President John Quincy Adams laid the cornerstone in 1843; the hill was renamed Mount Adams in his honor. To escape the smoke of the city, the University of Cincinnati moved the observatory to Mount Lookout in 1873, into a building designed by Samuel Hannaford. Its two buildings house an 1845 Merz und Mahler 11-inch refractor, possibly the oldest continually used telescope in the world, and a 1904 Alvan Clark & Sons 16-inch refractor. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1998. The larger Herget building is closed for renovation, with reopening planned for summer 2027, while the Mitchel building stays open for programs.
