Cimarron Canyon State Park lies along U.S. 64 in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Eagle Nest, New Mexico, within the larger Colin Neblett Wildlife Area. The canyon is walled by the Palisades Sill, a striking band of exposed igneous rock formed when magma intruded between layers of sedimentary stone and later cooled. The Cimarron River runs through the canyon and is a popular trout-fishing stream. Campgrounds along the highway give easy access to both the river and surrounding forest trails.
