Chugach State Park

Chugach State Park borders Anchorage and covers roughly half a million acres of the Chugach Mountains, making it one of the largest state parks in the country. Trailheads reachable directly from city neighborhoods, including the popular short hike up Flattop Mountain, give Anchorage residents unusually easy access to true wilderness. The park's terrain ranges from glaciers and alpine tundra to forested valleys, and it supports Dall sheep, moose, and both black and brown bears. Its proximity to a major city makes it one of the most heavily used backcountry parks in Alaska.
