Chippewa Square is one of the 22 squares of Savannah, Georgia, laid out in 1815 on Bull Street in the middle of the city's five rows of squares. It is named for the American soldiers killed at the Battle of Chippawa in the War of 1812. At its center stands the James Oglethorpe Monument by sculptor Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon, unveiled in 1910, and the opening park-bench scene of the 1994 film Forrest Gump was shot on the square's north side. The Savannah Theatre at 222 Bull Street first opened on the square in 1818 and is one of the oldest continually operating theatres in the United States, but the building standing today is largely a 1948 Art Deco rebuild after a fire.
