Chinatown Honolulu Historic District

$8.00

Honolulu's Chinatown Historic District is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the United States, a grid of low brick and stone buildings on the edge of downtown between Nuʻuanu Stream, Beretania Street, Nuʻuanu Avenue and the harbor. Chinese laborers brought to Hawaii's sugar plantations settled here as merchants once their contracts ended, and at its peak in 1900 the neighborhood was about 56% Chinese. Fires in 1886 and 1900 destroyed most of it, the second one set to burn out bubonic plague, so most of today's buildings date from the rebuilding of 1901. Oʻahu Market has sold fresh fish and produce at King and Kekaulike streets since 1904, and the restored Hawaii Theatre anchors the Arts District on the eastern edge. About 36 acres were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
