Chicot State Park, near Ville Platte, is built around Lake Chicot, generally described as the largest lake entirely within Louisiana's borders. Its cypress-lined shore hosts a canoe trail, campgrounds, and hiking paths through pine and hardwood forest. The park is adjacent to the Louisiana State Arboretum, established in the 1960s as one of the first state-supported arboreta in the country to preserve native Louisiana plant species. Fishing for bass and crappie is a major draw on the lake.
