Chickasaw Park

$8.00

Chickasaw Park is a municipal park in Louisville's West End, bounded by the Ohio River on the west and Southwestern Parkway on the east. Once the country estate of political boss John Henry Whallen, it began development as a park in 1923 to a plan by the Olmsted firm and was completed in the 1930s as part of the city's Olmsted park system. In 1924 the City Parks Commission designated Chickasaw one of the few parks open to Black residents, and it remained segregated until Mayor Andrew Broaddus desegregated the city's parks in 1955 after an NAACP-backed lawsuit. The park has the city's only free clay tennis courts, a pond that was dredged, expanded and reopened in 2024, playgrounds, a lodge and picnic pavilions. Muhammad Ali, who grew up nearby on Grand Avenue, was known to run here.
