Chicano Park

$8.00

Chicano Park is a 7.9-acre park in Barrio Logan, San Diego, set beneath the approaches of the San Diego–Coronado Bridge. It holds the largest collection of outdoor murals in the United States, painted on the bridge's concrete pylons and freeway retaining walls, along with sculptures, earthworks and a central kiosko. The park grew out of a community takeover on April 22, 1970, when residents and students occupied land slated for a California Highway Patrol station and demanded the park the city had promised them. Muralists began painting the pillars in 1973, and the murals depict Chicano history, immigration, civil rights leaders and Mexican and Indigenous heritage. The park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016.
