The Chicago Cultural Center is a neoclassical landmark in the Loop, across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park, run by the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Boston architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge designed it as Chicago's central public library and a memorial hall for the Grand Army of the Republic, and it was completed in 1897. It was converted to an arts and culture center in 1978, the first free municipal cultural center in the country. The building is known for its two stained-glass domes: a 38-foot Tiffany glass dome over Preston Bradley Hall, which the center calls the largest Tiffany dome in the world, and a Healy and Millet dome over the Grand Army of the Republic rotunda. It hosts free exhibitions, concerts and talks, and it is the city's official reception venue.
