Cherokee Park

$8.00

Cherokee Park is a 409-acre municipal park in Louisville's Highlands, designed in 1891 by Frederick Law Olmsted as the eastern anchor of the city's Olmsted park system. Beargrass Creek winds through its rolling meadows and woods, crossed by stone and wooden bridges. A 2.4-mile Scenic Loop circles much of the park, with separate lanes for one-way car traffic and for walkers, runners and cyclists. Landmarks include Hogan's Fountain, a 1905 Enid Yandell sculpture of the god Pan, the Big Rock picnic area on the creek and the 1907 nine-hole golf course. After the April 3, 1974 tornado felled thousands of trees, the park was replanted from Olmsted's original plans. Interstate 64 passes under Cochran Hill in twin tunnels opened in 1970 so the highway would not split the park.
