Cheekwood is a 55-acre historic estate on the western edge of Nashville, built for Leslie and Mabel Cheek after the family's Cheek-Neal Coffee company, maker of Maxwell House, was sold in 1928. New York architect Bryant Fleming designed the limestone Georgian-style mansion and its formal gardens, completed in 1932 and modeled on 18th-century English manors. In the 1950s the Cheeks' daughter, Huldah Cheek Sharp, and her husband offered the estate for a botanical garden and art museum, which opened in 1960. The botanical garden covers the whole site, with collections of boxwood, daffodils, dogwoods, hostas, hydrangeas, Japanese maples and Southeastern native plants. The museum shows American art, English and American decorative arts and a large collection of sculpture by Nashville artist William Edmondson.
