Chattanooga National Cemetery

$8.00

Chattanooga National Cemetery is a 120.9-acre United States national cemetery near the center of Chattanooga, administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas ordered it established in 1863, after the Battles for Chattanooga, as a burial ground for Union soldiers, and it became a national cemetery in 1867. By 1870 more than 12,000 had been buried there, most of them unknown, including nearly 1,500 reburials from the Chickamauga battlefield. Its monuments include a 40-foot memorial archway built in 1868 and the 1890 Andrews Raiders Memorial, topped by a bronze replica of the locomotive The General. Medal of Honor recipients buried there include Desmond Doss and Charles H. Coolidge, and the cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
