Iron-on patch

Centennial Park

$8.00

Centennial Park is a 132-acre urban park about two miles west of downtown Nashville, across West End Avenue from Vanderbilt University. The land was farmland, then state fairgrounds and a racetrack, before it was landscaped for the 1897 Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. When the fair's temporary buildings came down, the full-scale replica of the Parthenon stayed, along with Lake Watauga, the sunken gardens and a bandshell, and the park was dedicated in 1903. The Parthenon was rebuilt in concrete between 1925 and 1931 and now houses an art museum and Alan LeQuire's statue of Athena. Under Jim Crow, Black Nashvillians were barred from the park until after the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The park also holds LeQuire's Tennessee Woman Suffrage Monument, unveiled in 2016.
